Alexa here. About seven years ago, I watched Oprah tell women to get out a mirror and examine themselves “down there”. I first examined myself at about 12 and knew what I looked like “down there”. Inquiring minds want to know.

Shortly after the Oprah show, I unintentionally launched an extraordinary journey into myself. In a moment of rage and anguish over devasting comments from a man I dated briefly, I picked up the camera and began photographing myself in an increasingly explicit manner.

I recommend this journey to Everywoman, now that I enjoy the fuits of my discovery.

I’ve always said that the photo journey began with my attempt to take smiling photos of Alexa. This is true, but clearly my unconscious mind was also at work. I was pissed and not admitting the full range of my intentions.

My study of smiling better in the bathroom mirror evolved explosively. Blessed with two very private terraces at the time, my digital journey became an increasingly erotic study of my own sensuality and body.

I adore Venice … so much so that I once slept there until noon. I was so confused when I woke up, I thought I had died and was in another place in the universe. This was a private trip with my partner … the train from Zurich through the Alps to Venice and the sea.

Brushing my hair, still amazed that I had slept until noon, I heard a familiar song outside. What the heck!! Flinging open the windows, I was hanging out into the canal, bearing witness to a uniquely special sight.

The song was “Pomp and Circumstance”. It was graduation day for the American University in Rome, but with a satellite in Venice. Gondolas filled with white-robed graduates drifted through the canal.

Everyone was cheering … all of Venice was out to greet them. It was a gorgeous sight, a throwback to a different time and place and values.

Another time I had two colleagues with me on a business trip in Cortina, the Italian ski resort. I can’t remember the geography exactly, but the driver took us to Venice, just for dinner and to fly out the next morning.

In the morning, we took a water taxi to the airport. My two associates were totally exhausted and asleep on the benches of the boat. I was completely awake … standing outside in the fog … waving goodbye to a city I love deeply.
